Apple Watch: A Decade of Glances

Back in September 2014, during an Apple event, Apple announced its very first Apple Watch, the Series 1. Seven months later, in April 2015, the Apple Watch officially hit stores and started arriving in customers’ hands.

Yes, 2015 feels like yesterday, but the reality is that it’s been exactly 10 years today, and that’s definitely a reason to celebrate a decade of Apple Watch.

Honestly, I was never a big fan of the Apple Watch when it first launched. I always thought it looked too square, and the screen felt noticeably small and not fully aligned with the rounded corners of the case. It gave me this feeling that something was a bit off almost disproportional or not quite well designed. Of course, time passed, designs evolved, and it took me a few generations before I finally bought my first one in 2021: the Apple Watch SE (1st Gen).

The design language has changed a lot over the years, and nowadays my Apple Watch is on my wrist for almost 12 hours a day.

The Apple Watch has clearly become an essential device in people’s everyday lives, not just because it lets us check notifications without pulling out our iPhone, but because it has helped, and continues to help, users around the world monitor their health and even save lives. Features like fall detection, sleep apnea detection, Emergency SOS, crash detection, heart rate monitoring, and more have made a real difference.

I also believe the Apple Watch has become a form of self-expression. Pretty much everything is customisable from watch faces to cases and bands letting you choose what best matches your personality.

And of course, the ecosystem plays a huge role. The way everything integrates makes the Apple Watch feel essential: the subtle haptic feedback when a notification comes in, controlling your music, following directions from Apple Maps, tracking steps and health data, and closing those fitness rings you’re probably trying to complete every week.

I’m sure more Apple Watch features will be announced at WWDC 2025, and I’m genuinely excited to see what’s next. From the Series 1 to the Ultra models we have today, I’m not sure Apple fully realised how successful this device would become, but I’m certain users (especially the tech-savvy ones) are ready and waiting for what’s coming next - including myself!
