Apple iPhone 17 Pro
The new iPhone 17 Pro in Cosmic Orange.
Apple introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max during their awe-dropping event. This is the third model released during this event and it will be added to the existing lineup of iPhones available in stores. With the release of these models, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are now discontinued.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are the most powerful iPhones ever made, bringing a dramatic leap in performance, advanced camera systems, an improved gaming experience, and expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities. Both models feature the new A19 Pro processor, which is the most powerful Apple has created so far - and according to Apple, it’s 40% faster than the previous generation. To manage everything these Pro iPhones can do, Apple has also introduced an Apple-designed vapour chamber, allowing the devices to dissipate heat more efficiently, maintain consistent performance, and improve long-term battery longevity.
In addition, all three cameras - Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto - now feature 48MP Fusion sensors. According to Apple, this camera system offers the equivalent of eight lenses. Optical zoom reaches its highest level ever on an iPhone, with up to 8x zoom. The front camera has also been upgraded to an 18MP Centre Stage camera, allowing for higher-resolution photos and more detail. It also lets you expand the field of view to take landscape photos without rotating the iPhone. For content creators and users who rely heavily on their iPhone for work, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max include ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock - industry-first video features on an iPhone.
One thing that genuinely surprised me is that Apple decided to move away from titanium for the Pro models. In the past, Apple has always used premium materials for its Pro lineup, but this year is different. The iPhone 17 Pro now features an aluminium unibody made from aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminium. This change was made to maximise performance and improve heat dissipation during heavy use. In comparison, titanium can struggle more with heat management, which could impact battery lifespan over time (a welcome change in my opinion!).
Oh, and by the way - for the first time ever, there’s no black iPhone. The colours released this year are Deep Blue, Cosmic Orange, and Silver. Just wanted to put that out there. (The black colour is usually the one I go for ☹️).
Display sizes remain the same as the previous iPhone 16 Pro lineup, with the iPhone 17 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max a 6.9-inch display. Both feature a Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display, up to 3000 nits of peak brightness, and Ceramic Shield 2, along with an improved coating that helps reduce scratches and glare.
The new iPhone Body strap and the Clear case.
Alongside these new iPhones, Apple also released a range of new accessories to customise them and make them more personal. These include silicone cases, FineWoven cases, body straps, and more.
These new iPhones are shaping up to be the best Pro iPhones Apple has ever created, ready to be fully taken advantage of by those who need and depend on a Pro device on a daily basis. I’m honestly super excited to see them in person at the store.
